Friday

  • Renaissance Journal Books. (8:00 PM, Dining Hall) Make a soft-covered “octavo” journal book for all your SCA notes and memories. 8 seats available, materials $15. Auditors and hangers-on, free. Instructor: The Honorable Lord Pietro Nicolo da San Tebaldo.
  • Hands-on Dyeing Workshop.  (7:00 PM, Artisans/Merchants Row) Mordanting with alum on wool and silk.  Sample sized skeins of wool yarn and silk handkerchiefs will be mordanted in preparation for dyeing on Saturday.  The basic purpose and technique of alum mordanting will be presented.  Participants are welcome to bring small amounts of wool yarn (one or two ounces) or silk scarves to add to the mordanting process.  Basic supplies provided.  No class fee. Instructor: Baroness Clairiel du Vent Argent.

Saturday

  • Hands-on Dyeing Workshop.  (All Day, Artisans/Merchants Row) An all day dying workshop on Saturday will focus on dyeing with weld and other natural materials.  A discussion and demonstration of dying using weld will be presented around 2 pm, but there will be other pots on the fire daylong.  Stop by to observe, ask questions or discuss natural dying throughout the day.  Sample sized skeins of wool and silk handkerchiefs that were mordanted on Friday will be available for participants to add to the dye vat and take home.  No class fee. Instructor: Baroness Clairiel du Vent Argent.
  • Mystery Class. (All Day, Artisans/Merchants Row) Instructor: Baron Ealdred of Gwyntarian.
  • Period Embroidery. (4:00 PM, Pavilion Classroom A) A hands-on period embroidery class geared towards beginners and how to get started. Instructor: Baroness Constanza de Mendoza
  • Young Bards: I’m bored, let’s build a story! (1:00 PM, Magic Carpet Kavehane) An opportunity for you, or you and your child, to learn how use  the elements of story-telling to make your own tall tale. No pressure, no command performances, just a fun 90 minutes of learning the pieces parts and putting them together. All ages welcome. 90 minutes. Instructor: The Honorable Lady Juliane Bechaumpe.
  • Leather Girdle Hung Wax Tablet Case. (3:30 PM, Pavilion Classroom B) Design based on archaeological research from Purses in Pieces. Attendees will learn how to make a leather girdle hung wax tablet case (aka cell phone camouflage.) Class is hands on, limit 5. Class and materials fee: $8. Instructor: Lord Oliver of Cleftlands
  • Youth Officer Roundtable – (12:00 PM, Youth Point) Are you interested in running or knowing what it takes to run a youth activity? Do you want to know what is a Minister of Youth at Large is? Do you have any questions about youth in the SCA? Bring your questions and Curiosity to this class and I will do my best to help. If there is time, we can brain storm ideas to encourage youth participation. Instructor: Lady Ceara inghean Mhuirgheasa uí Fhaoláin.
  • Basic Japanese Ink Painting – (2:00 PM, Pavilion Classroom A) Basic review of how to make Japanese Ink Paintings with materials you might already have in your scribal bag and beyond. Cost: Donations welcome. Class size: 9. Age limit: 10+. Instructor: Artemisia Volterra.
  • Hand-sewing Leather - (2:00 PM, Pavilion Classroom B) This class will demonstrate tools, materials, and techniques for sewing leather, whether for fine garments, heavy armor, or Other Divers Useful Objects such as pouches and cases.  Topics to be covered: Tools, including the stitch groover, marking wheel, sewing awl, stitching awl, stitching pony, sewing needles, and glover’s needles.  Materials, including linen thread, artificial sinew, beeswax, boar bristles, and cobbler’s handwax. Techniques, including threading needles (there’s a trick!), making up threads, waxing threads, and attaching threads to boar bristles.  Participants will receive an informative, illustrated handout at no charge (link below).  “Sample kits” containing lengths of waxed and unwaxed linen thread, artificial sinew, sewing needles, boar bristles, beeswax, and cobbler’s handwax will be available for five dollars. Instructor: The Honorable Lord Brendan O Corraidhe.
  • Basic Knitting – (11:00, Pavilion Classroom A) You too can be a stick jockey!  Bring a pair of knitting needles size 7, 8, 9 or 10 and knitting worsted weight yarn.  You will learn enough to make a hat for Queen Amalie’s Royal Knitwits  foster children’s charity. No class size limit. Ages 8 and up. $1.00 handout fee. Instructor: Lady Nadyezhda the Simple.
  • Introduction to Siege Engines – (10:00, Battlefield) Participants will learn how to operate a ballista safely and accurately. Siege authorizations to follow during any battle that allows for them. (Instructor: Roderick McKracken.)
