Brewing Competition

Co-ordinator: THL Zuriel Nightshade

The Brewing Competition will be from 2:30 to 4:30 pm

Juding will be in three categories- Beer, Wine, Cordial/other. The Brewing comp will be counted as an IKBG as well as a competition. It will also be a Q+A/round table style provided there is time. All IKBG Masters are asked to please contact me if they can judge. Non IKBG entrants/new brewers are welcome!!

Judging will be held on all three categories appropriate to the type of entry. Winners will be chosen from each category and one over all winner. Combined with the competition will be a short class and discussion on brewing held by Zuriel.

Scoring will include:

  • Presentation- All beverages should be presented in appropriate containers.
  • Documentation- There should be some period reference as well as a complete recipe, including the brewer's process.
  • Beverage- The bulk of points are given based on the beverage's look, taste, etc.

Two classroom spaces are in the lower hall, and one 'noisy' space will be used in the upper hall 'town square.'

Class Descriptions

Chinese Calligraphy - Taught by Lady Clara d'Este
Come and learn the basics of Chinese Calligraphy! We will discuss the origins of the Chinese written language and and it's evolution during Period times. There will be Chinese Calligraphy ink sticks and brushes for you to try making your own ink and painting with it. You will learn how to write a few basic characters.
The Commedians of the Renaissance - Taught by i Verdi Confusi
Commedia dell'arte is the professional theatre of Sixtteenth Century Italy. Come learn how to play from the stock characters themselves in this Period masked improvisational art! The class will begin with a short commedia performance about commedia!
Foolishness and Follies: Silly medieval dances that will make you smile - Taught by Lady Sibylla of Amasya
11:30-12:30pm AND repeats 1:00-2:00pm in the upstairs 'town square' Dances to be done during each session will be dependent on how many people show up and what their level of expertise is, but will be selected from the following list: Washerwoman's Bransle, Black Nag, Gathering Peascods, SCA Maltese Bransle, Female Sailor, Pease Bransle, New Bo Peep, Staines Morris, Bransle Officiale, Petit Vriens, Rosti Boli Gioiosa.
Fretted Instrument workshop - Taught by THL Brendan O Corraidhe
Whether you play guitar, lute, cithara, cittern, mandolin, bouzoiki, or viola de gamba, this fast-paced, hands-on session will give you essential tools and information that will make you a better player. You'll learn a simple left-hand exercise that will strengthen your fretting hand and teach your fingers where to go without you having to watch them. You'll also learn a simple method for unlocking the mysteries of the medieval modes. Bring your instrument and note-taking materials. Instructor is a professional guitar teacher who has taught hundreds of students over three decades.
Leatherworking 101, or How to Make Dead Animals Do What You Want - Taught by THL Brendan O Corraidhe
Forget that prepunched laced coin purse you made in Scouts. This hands-on class will cover types of leather, sources for tools and materials, and basic techniques including skiving, stamping, carving, molding, and two-needle sewing. Instructor claims experience and enthusiasm rather than expertise and skill. $5 fee for take-home kit of materials & tools (handout is free). Note: the techniques covered in this class work well for making leather masks!
Carolingian Resurgence - Taught by Countess Isabella of Greycliffs
This class will cover the achievements of mostly Charlemagne, politically/militarily, culturally, and religiously. Countess Isabella teaches Medieval History at case Western Reserve University.
Ciders - Taught by Baron Ealdred of Gwyntarian

Fashion Roundtable - Led by Lady Bronwen Elvina
11th and 12th Century Gloves - Taught by Duke Alen
Two hours, practical class on evidence and construction of period gloves.
Tomfoolery taught by Baroness Catriona
To think of the Medieval fool only as a character in popular entertainments is to misunderstand the influence the fool had in history, folklore, and legend. The class will look at the fool's place in Medieval European culture and how The Feast of Fools and Carnevale became the fool's playground.
Hávamál Intro, Viking Ethics Class taught by Lord Kari Garanhirson of Trothiem
Kari explains the ethics and morality of the Vikings.

Rapier Schedule

9:00 a.m. - List Opens - Authorizations and Sparring

11:00 a.m. - Tournament of Fooles

Each participant will spin the Wheel of Fooles to select a Dance Card. This card will list a number of fighting styles, accoutrements, and/or victory conditions. The participant will choose one of these for each bout and must fight using each item on their dance card before repeating. The styles, accoutrements, and victory conditions on the cards will be based upon well-known texts on period fencing (but please note that their majesties of Northshield have declared The Princess Bride to be a period text for the duration of their reign.) This will be Round Robin Tournament, three passes per bout, double kills re-fought only if there is a tie. Winner receives a custom-built castle constructed at a location of their choice.

2:00 p.m. - Bearpit Tournament, wounds retained.

A Cut-and-Thrust Tournament will be offered if there is sufficient interest.

A Youth Tournament will be offered if there is a sufficient number of participants.

Challenges:

All entrants in the challenges should contact the Master or Mistress of the Revels in advance.

Busker's Challenge: Buskers will collect beans from the populace; at the end of the day, the beans will be tallied and the top-grossing busker will be awarded a fabulous prize! Performances are not limited in time, but you must acquire a Busker's License from the Master or Mistress of the Revels in advance.

Fool's Challenge: In order to crown a Lord Misrule for the day, the greatest fools in the Known World will meet in open competition. Performances are limited to five minutes, but are unrestricted in content.

Bawdy Bardic Challenge: How many innuendos (or is it innuendi?) can you dance on the head of a pin? Performances limited to five minutes.
