Take some time to emerge yourself in true medieval fashion within the Artisan Row while at NOWM. Enjoy learning more about fiber arts, daily life skills, and even metal work.

Starting on Friday night the Gausthaus Zum Enten pavilion will be opening the books on both the torchlight tournaments and the Shakespearean puppet competition. Not on site Friday night but would like to win some Cleftlands coinage? We will continue to take bets on anything all weekend from any of the tournaments and the bocce game.

Saturday, wander by and learn about period fibers, their preparations (we will even have a fiber producing rabbit onsite), and other fiber arts. There will be demonstrations on period life such as medieval laundry demonstration. There will also be a metal arts area with demonstrations AND opportunity to try your hand at the forge.

Saturday night, all brewers, vinters, and cordial artists are welcome to share their brews in the brewer’s roundtable. Newcomers are welcomed and there will be a selection of knowledgeable brewers present to help get you started in brewing. Don’t forget to bring picture identification; they will be checked.

If you have a period project that you would like to work or a period activity you would like to share, please join us by contacting verena@broomstich.com.

Activities

Demonstration of Period Activities: From singing, to fighting, to weaving and cooking. Do you have a period activity that you can demonstrate? Fiber Arts for Youth: Youth are invited into Artisans Row to learn more about where our fabrics come from. From both animals to plants, kids (with their parents) are invited to experience fibers in their earliest forms, to processing, spinning and weaving. A live rabbit will be onsite for a little “hands on” fur preparation, children (and adults) with allergies or asthma should be prepared. [Artisans Row, Village Green, 12 PM]

Flax-Processing: How to process flax straw from start to spinning. Including a look at flax in its original form, the messy process it takes to turn it in thread, and finally a spun linen item. [Artisans Row, Village Green, 11 AM to 5 PM]

Intro to the Forge: Come learn the basics of metalwork and actually get to try your hand making some simple blacksmithing items such as s-hooks, j-hooks, nails and the like. Perfect for beginners and more experienced blacksmiths. No cost. [Artisans Row, Village Green, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM]

Leather Art Demonstrations: Come check out Leather arts from construction, to tooling, to waxing. All will be demonstrated throughout the day within Artisan rows. [Artisans Row, Village Green, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM]

Medieval Betting: Come place (or collect) a bet on activities that are going on at NOWM. Table will also be open for anyone who wants to come play or teach period games. [Artisans Row, Village Green, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM]

Out, Damned Spot!: An Informal Demonstration of Medieval Laundering. What did people use to clean and iron their clothing in the days before modern detergents and electric appliances? And how well did it work? Join us for medieval laundry day as we try some period techniques then compare the “before” and “after.” [Artisans Row, Village Green, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM]
